Do I need a permit to build a fence in Victoria?
For most standard boundary fences, no. Here's when the rules change, and where to check for your block.
For most standard boundary fences, no, you won't need a permit. That covers the bulk of the fences we build, so it's usually not something to worry about.
That said, there are some situations where a permit or council consent can come into play, and the rules vary from council to council. So rather than guess, the safe move is a quick check with Surf Coast Shire before you commit.
When a permit is more likely to be needed
A permit or council consent can come into play when:
- The fence is taller than the standard height.
- It's a front fence, or a fence near the road or on a corner block, where sightlines matter.
- It's a swimming pool or spa safety barrier, which has its own strict rules.
- Your property is in a heritage overlay, which can require approval even for a normal fence.
- You're building over an easement, such as drainage or sewer.
The honest answer
Most boundary fences don't need a permit. But whether yours does depends on its height, position, materials and your specific property, and each council applies things a little differently. So before you commit, it's worth a quick call to Surf Coast Shire council to confirm where you stand. They're the ones who can give you a definite answer for your block.
Where we fit in
We build across Anglesea, Aireys Inlet, Fairhaven and Moggs Creek. Once you've got the go-ahead sorted, give us a call on 0422 258 131 and we'll get you a quote and get it built.
This is general information for Victoria, not a permit determination. Always confirm with Surf Coast Shire council or a registered building surveyor for your specific fence and property.
